On the surface, Japanese Zen paintings appear simple, direct and sometimes amusing, but in looking deeper one realizes that these are also paintings of great power. They should be a pure expression of the artist’s spiritual awareness.
Zen painting is free, effortless, natural painting, there is no painter and no thing being painted; the painter and the painted are one.
I allways wanted to paint like the old masters .
It took me about 10 minutes to find the right brush and smudge tool , and about 10-15 to paint it.
It is much more difficult than it looks. I started three times, and botched. I had to use the eraser a lot, and i did not liked the finished product . I tried too much to make it perfect, to be pleasing to the eye, and it did not represent what painting a zen art was all about. Then i calmed myself, and started again. Finished in 5-6 minutes. Then i found a scan of some old paper and gave my painting an older look.
